Description
Tired of dead eyes from your students around the holidays?
Keep your students actively engaged, writing, and PRODUCTIVELY TALKING with real-life legal cases!
This thinkLaw Task Card Activity uses FIVE real-life legal cases:
-A woman sues Johnson and Johnson after her husband's home-made sheep costume catches fire.
-A man sues Warner Brothers for stealing his ideas for a haunted movie. The studio says the movie is based on a true story so they don't need his permission. He says there's no such thing as ghosts.
-A woman sues the owners of a corn maze after their experience proves a little too frightening.
-A man sues a real-estate company and former owners after he discovers his new house is haunted!
- A costume company sues a store over ripping off their banana costume
Students will work in small groups to analyze the cases, examine evidence, and ask questions. Each group member will be assigned a job and explicitly explained their task. Students will conclude by selecting a case and writing a persuasive paragraph using the thinkLaw DRAAW+C framework as a guide!
PLUS A SECOND LESSON!
A man gets angry with his neighbors and creates a Halloween display using tombstones with their names and poems of how they meet their untimely demises! A fist fight ensues! The police arrive and tell the man he can take down the display or face disorderly conduct charges. The man sues the police department saying they violated his right to free speech. Will he win?
Extend that to a fraternity facing sanctions for their offensive costumes? Does free speech also apply here?
Halloween is on a school day this year! But that shouldn't strike fear into your heart! Let us help you with the fun, rigorous, and engaging Halloween Lesson.
Dead Neighbors? uses the critical thinking technique analysis from multiple perspectives to engage the students in your classroom and examine all sides of an issue.
